Paul Klee: Fourth graders were introduced to the artist of the year Paul Klee and worked on making an abstract portrait using warm and cool colors. They learned about negative space and were asked to leave parts of their drawings the white of the page to highlight the facial features of their portrait.

Mask Contest: The entire school district held a competition for students to design a mask that would be sold at the PTA fair. Students learned how to create a design using only one color and how to work within the restrictions and guidelines given by the contest. Fourth graders also learned about the importance of working towards a deadline that was imposed by the contest.

Animals and Art: The third lesson I taught to fourth grade was about animals and representing them in art. Students had the opportunity to create the animals using any material or medium of their choosing. They used class time to sketch out ideas and worked at home to build their projects.

Art and Perspective: Students were introduced to perspective in art. They were tasked with creating at least three snowmen and drawing each one in a different perspective: face on, profile, and aerial view. Students then used the rest of class time to create their backgrounds and explore how different perspectives change the way a person views an art piece.
